I honestly don’t know how many times I’ve rewatched this show, but it never gets old. I’ll be watching this until I’m a blind, senile old man and I’ll still be as amazed by it as I was when I first watched it.
It is in my humble opinion that Hayao Miyazaki peaked with this 1978 masterpiece. Outside of a dozen or so Lupin episodes, this was his directorial debut and it already had everything you’d expect out of his work. Vibrant characters full of life (everyone from our main trio to the simple side-characters are so vibrant and alive), A fantastical setting full of nature, strong-willed women, adventurous boys, Unique flying machines, with a powerful message about nature being…

I’m ecstatic right now. My favorite anime finally got added to letterboxd! I’m currently rewatching the series AGAIN so I’ll get a proper review for this series on this page soon enough. I’d already reviewed the series on the cut down movie edit. I just wanted to celebrate a bit with this entry.

Before Hayao Miyazaki would go on to create some of the greatest movies ever made, he made a show that would not only define his career, but Studio Ghibli in general. Future Boy Conan is a great start for what Miyazaki can do with storytelling, character development, and themes.
Despite taking place in a post-apocalyptic setting, the show finds a way to let that world come to life. It’s a very good story about being a selfless leader, finding hope and optimism in a broken world, and a sense of adventure.
If there’s one thing I’m excited to discuss about Ghibli films, it’s the characters. These characters were not only wonderful to watch, but were the blueprint to Ghibli’s character… -

How did I completely forget that I saw this wonderful show when I was a young child????

More Miyazaki fans really need to watch this as it's sort of a blueprint to some of the themes Miyazaki would later explore in his films. Most notably Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Nausicaa. Plus it's just an awarding experience to see how Miyazaki directed a TV anime before Ghibli was established.
Here's a YT playlist of all of the episodes in 1080p if any of you are interested and want more Miyazaki greatness: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT3zWuD6Rbo&list=PL0A3btqyajzSQSpEd-DBv7PTqUfb1NruX

As a huge, huge, huge Miyazaki fan (he is one of my three all-time favorite directors, I think I mentioned that before) watching this early work of his, has been a long time coming. Due to the courtesy of Shout Factory (GKIDS) we’ve finally got an English friendly HD release to enjoy. Future Boy Conan predates the founding of Studio Ghibli by several years. And for a longtime hardcore fan like me, it was very fascinating to see a lot of themes, characters and story element here that Miyazaki would reuse in his later feature films. The post-apocalyptic setting for example reminded me a lot of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind while the two leads, Conan and Lana,…

Aesthetics, adventure, values... most of Miyazaki's poetics are present. One big difference from future works is that there are some real villains to contend with here. There is a bit of naivety, a couple of characters have a weird or hasty arc; the plot instead is well orchestrated and always entertaining. Over the course of the series the overall quality progressively improves and as we approach the finale everything becomes more dramatic and spectacular. In the last third the animation reaches very high peaks, a display of techniques that are still of great impact.

I can't believe this (g)old masterpiece was released when my mother was born in this world
I thought I will comeback watching anime from illegal website because I don't want to waste my money for unhealthy things right now then I saw this anime on Ani-One, what a thankful. It deserve to watch legally..
Love the premise story, set in after world war and big disaster then want to recover world to make new peaceful life.
No more doubt anymore because it was directed by two GOATS ghibli directors who are Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki
Lot of enjoyments Conan just reminds me with kid Goku who had more strength agility with better stamina and always never surrender againts high…

This is a staggering work. Beautiful, deeply human. The restoration is fantastic, you get an almost tactile impression of the art elements.
I am a little sad that I only just saw it for the first time, but watching it a couple episodes at a time every couple of Saturdays with my kid was pretty great too.
Immediately one of my favorite Miyazaki things, and it was his first big project—Makes me wish he’d do a 10 hour serialized movie to cap off his career. Immediately going into the rewatch pile.
